Coop Denmark Christmas

For those who celebrate Christmas, it’s often the busiest time of the year. Whether you are a consumer or a retailer, it’s all about planning ahead and making sure that everyone and everything is ready and leading up to the grand finale: Christmas Day.

According to PwC’s Holiday Outlook 2024, shoppers in the U.S. plan to spend approximately $1,638 on gifts, travel, and entertainment this holiday season, marking a 7% increase from 2023. The research also shows that consumers are eager to embrace both digital innovations and traditional in-store experiences throughout the shopping journey.

This aligns with the broader trends in the retail industry, as the dynamics for both retailers and consumers shift towards a more digitalized experience. PwC’s Holiday Outlook 2024 concludes that, based on a survey of 4,000 consumers about their plans and priorities for the holiday season, 2024 will be defined by strategic spending, personalised experiences, and technological integration.

At Lobyco, this is exactly what we’re passionate about. Our goal is to help retailers stand out in the digital landscape, drive more traffic, and build stronger customer loyalty. During the retail peak of the year, it’s all about how you—as a retailer—can win Christmas.

So, welcome to our series ‘Winning Christmas’, where throughout December, we’ll spotlight some of our clients and show how they use our solutions and technology to stand out and succeed in this busy season. Each week, we’ll provide insights into the features our clients leverage to increase traffic and boost sales.

Coop Denmark

Coop Denmark is the country’s second-largest grocery retailer and a leading consumer goods brand. Coop Denmark operates as a cooperative, owned by two million members. The cooperative employs 40,000 people and operates approximately 900 stores under four different brands across Denmark.

Plans for ‘Winning Christmas’

Coop Denmark is a frontrunner in creating loyalty and driving traffic through engaging app features. This December, they will launch a gamified approach to engage app users, aiming to make the holiday season more interactive and rewarding.

To ensure the gamification approach is as relevant as possible, Coop Denmark has set two key objectives for the app during Christmas:

  1. Daily Engagement: A new game will be available in the Coop app from December 1st until December 24th.
  2. Broad Accessibility: Games will be active daily from 00:00 to 23:59 and will be promoted via the app’s feed and hero banners.

To maximize traffic diversity, Coop will alternate between prizes that must be collected in-store and those that will be sent directly to customers. By offering both online and offline prizes, they increase in-store activity while also providing customers the chance to win from the comfort of their homes. This combination of approaches encourages repeat participation in daily games and fosters greater loyalty to the retailer.

Using gamification is an obvious strategy for ‘Winning Christmas’, as this time of year is all about giving—and receiving—presents. Creating loyalty and engagement through exciting games is something our solutions are designed to enhance, and past successes in December prove its effectiveness.

In December 2023, the Coop app reached 4,2 million games played, 18 seconds spent in average on games, 67% went and collected the gift, and a grand total of 479,000 customers that redeemed their prizes. This meant that Coop saw an additional 470,000 customers visiting their stores from December 1st until December 24th.

By leveraging Lobyco’s tools, Coop Denmark is well-prepared for the busiest retail season of the year. Our solutions help take off the pressure on retailers, enabling them to drive traffic to their stores and engage customers effectively through personalisation, loyalty, promotions and gamification.

This concludes our first insights of the ‘Winning Christmas’-series. But fear not! We are back next week with insights on how Finland’s biggest discount chain, Tokmanni, uses our features and solutions to win Christmas in the Finnish market.
